Saturday with family   Leave a comment

Yesterday we spent the day with 2 of A’s sisters – S and L, and their aunts N, B, and M, and uncle J. Also Cousin C.

We drove down to Wayne, where Aunt N lives, and brought along a whole pile of Subway sandwiches, a few cup cakes, etc. Everyone else rode up from Portland with Cousin C. It was a good gathering, these aunts and uncle are the few remaining siblings on A’s mom’s side – originally ten in number. They range in age from 77-87, and are all great fun. the stories were really flying, and a few photos got passed around. I love spending time with them all, hearing the stories of their childhood, growing up in Maine in the thirties. They had fun!

I always wonder how it will go, who will be next. The youngest daughter (78? 79?) was not there, she is in a nursing home. But the remaining three siblings and one spouse all seem pretty solid, health wise. Brain power varies, but as half of the ones who are gone had the dreaded Alzheimer’s, we don;t worry too much about a forgotten name or event. Cousin C was smart enough to record the conversation when stories about camp or stealing a dollar to buy candy (and getting caught when the storekeeper knew enough to know there should not a ba a dollar in this kid’s hand, so sending said child home to return it!) started going, so they are recorded for posterity now.

Long day with lots of driving, but so worth it.

Even worth it when it meant missing the Maine Fiber Frolic. Yup, time with family is even more valuable than time with wonderful fiber.

I did find out that Cousin C knits, and has taken up spinning and weaving. She told me where I can go to get some good lessons on spinning. A was groaning…. turns out it is right nearby, although C lives a good three hours down the coast!
