Here’s a freeing thought, courtesy of my mother

My mother once gave me the greatest advice/permission.  She said “You don’t have to be polite to people who are rude to you.” I don’t think she meant that I could be rude back, just that I didn’t have to sit and take it, to be polite.

Of course, when the one family member who is usually rude to me IS rude to me, I can never think of what to do except be polite, so I usually am anyway. But if I ever want to say “I won’t sit here and listen to you be mean to me” and get up and walk away, it is OK. My mother said I could.

True Life 13

“Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you – not because they are nice, but because you are.”
